The American Society Standard (ASTM)

The American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) is a globally recognized organization that sets standards for various materials, including Bitumen. ASTM standards are widely used in the United States and around the world, providing guidelines for the manufacture, handling, and testing of Bitumen products.
ASTM standards for Bitumen cover a wide range of properties, such as penetration grade, softening point, viscosity, and ductility. The most commonly used standards for Bitumen in the United States are ASTM D946, ASTM D3381, and ASTM D6373.
ASTM D946 specifies the requirements and test methods for asphalt cement used in the construction of bituminous pavements. The standard defines the physical and chemical properties of asphalt cement, such as viscosity, penetration, ductility, and flash point, as well as the test methods used to measure these properties.
ASTM D3381 provides guidelines for the measurement of the low-temperature properties of asphalt binder and asphalt mixtures. This standard specifies the test methods used to determine the thermal cracking resistance of asphalt binder and mixtures under low-temperature conditions.
ASTM D6373 provides guidelines for the measurement of the rheological properties of asphalt binder at high temperatures. This standard specifies the test methods used to determine the viscosity and elasticity of asphalt binder at high temperatures, which are important factors in the performance of asphalt mixtures.
In addition to these standards, ASTM also sets guidelines for the storage, handling, and transport of Bitumen products. These guidelines ensure that Bitumen products are handled safely and efficiently, and that their quality and performance are maintained throughout the supply chain.
